New Magazine…International Style

 

International Quilt Festival: Quilt Scene was launched onto the world today …

with a quilt by our very own Sarah Fielke on the cover!.

This is a part of the Quilting Arts range of magazines and I am told it went worldwide today.

As you can see it is exquisitely photographed…although the above photo was deemed too country for the first edition…how times have changed since I first started quilting nine years ago…country reigned supreme then! And you guessed right…that is a quilt by Brandon Mably and Liza Prior Lucy!

The indescribable talent of Caryl Bryer Fallert was recognised in Houston this year as Best In Show.

Caryl has provided a link to a page where she explains her inspiration, motivation and how she went about achieving her dream…her vision for this quilt….in more ways than one. I cannot recommend highly enough that you read the story behind this quilt…but be warned…a pot of comforting camomile or other soothing tea and a box of tissues is simply a necessity!

I recently purchased one of Caryl’s kits…The Dancing Tree, to make for my son.

I look forward to starting this.

Caryl has designed the most amazing ranges of fabric for Bernatex ..her Aurora Borialis is to die for! Gradations is next on my list of must have fabrics! Glacier Park is also stunning.

She also has patterns, DVD’S and books available on her website. I wish I lived closer so that I could attend her workshops. Oh to be in Kentucky….Padukah …to be exact with all the artisans! Caryl…please let us know if you ever come Down Under.

She also has some of her art quilts for sale...a rare opportunity to purchase an artform which is quite like no other.

Quilted Patchwork Table Runner

The work of Victoria Gertenbach, Boo Dilly on flickr and etsy… needs little introduction….it stands up and smacks one in the face by way of introduction.

The colour assaults one…with such joy and delight that at first one does not notice the sheer artistry of her work. Once one sits back …sated from the visual feast one is able to absorb the sheer skill…the talent of Victoria.

Quilted Patchwork Table Runner - Detail

The sublime stitching…..often in rows of 3/16th of an inch…less really is more with her work. Her use of colour is masterful and never lary…it is often exquisite in its understatement. As is shown below with one of my personal favourites…her mid century modern piece.

Probably the most amazing thing about her work is the price…it is very reasonable and well within the reach of the average person. I cannot recommend her work highly enough.

yes…she dreamt it! Thanks so much Kathy for sharing your talent with us and for your generosity in allowing me free reign with your flickr stream.

Again I am brought to mind of other designers I have featured who were also so delightfully generous with their talent…Ruth Eglinton, Cherri of Cherry House Quilts and many many others yet to ber featured….all are incredibly giving of themselves and I do believe it is part of what has made them successful in this business. We are a different breed….as the incident with Ann Champion and Quiltermaker magazine showed… we champion the underdog [ no pun intended] and reward generosity of spirit.

Kathy can also be found here on her blog. I am looking forward to reading more about her design process….anyone who dreams up a design is my type of person!
