Popped up yesterday to Westfield Bondi Junction to meet a lovely lady who bought one of my pieces of LIBERTY by ROBERT GORDON china. I started collecting this set around my 50th birthday …so almost five years ago. I asked DAVID JONES if they would still have it for a few seasons and was assured they would but as always next season there were a few rogue pieces and that was it. So I was stuck with a few pieces and I had been so looking forward to collecting it but apart from my local coffee/homewares shop and occasionally at Vinnies I have not seen it again. It is even scarce on ebay so I am pleased that a piece is going to someone who really wants it.

What is it with these places putting out new ranges…..or several new ranges of china every year? If you cannot buy it all then, including spares, you are really stuck. Not everyone can buy entire sets all at once and like me not everyone wants to…where is the joy in collecting in that?  My son had a similar experience with a gorgeous coloured willow pattern which was on a huge display in the David Jones city store next to the Portmeirion. When he started collecting it every time he went shopping he asked if it would still be available in future. You can guess what happened, he is stuck with one serving of everything and a strangely untraceable brand, PALATE. I mean try googling palate…its ludicrous!

While I was at WESTFIELD I took some time to think about the poor Jewish man who took his life there a few weeks ago. I was also thinking about the appalling response to the tragedy by a member of their upper echelon.  It is in the newspaper reports what Mark Ryan, Westfield Group Director of Corporate Affairs, said about the gawkers …and not moving the gawkers along or shutting the centre. Heaven forbid that someone’s death might get in the way of anyone spending a dollar….or thousand.  Apparently lots of people were filming and texting as I imagine it was unusual to see a fully Orthodox Jewish person in such a situation. Maybe they were interested in seeing how the police handled it. A young chap who caught the whole thing on camera put it on Youtube because he was so appalled by the apathy of the staff. Not the …splatter…but the awful last minutes of this man’s life and the camera person clearly asking why Westfield were not moving the public out of the way. Do pay careful attention to the comments on the first link I have highlighted here…among these comments are those by workers and others who witnessed the event.

While we are talking about Westfield and David Jones, good on the ex CEO of DJ’s resigning today for “inappropriate conduct toward a female staff member” at a function. As regular readers of my blog know, not all companies admit when there is any form of harassment and this guy named and shamed himself. Perhaps it was all about to come out and he got in ahead of time but we know that is not always the case. Some companies turn it around and blame the  victim.  Well done David Jones and let us hope the young lady manages to go back to work and that her case is managed well by her lawyers. Another mistake we made apparently…..not getting lawyers involved before we made our complaints.

laura in stitches

Have been super busy selling especially this past week and am almost through my many sizes of clothing which I have had stored in vain hope of getting into them one day! I am so pleased that so many women are wearing and loving my  clothing. This stunning outfit above is a mixture of LAURA ASHLEY USA and STITCHES AUSTRALIA. During the five years I have had this skirt I only wore it once and since I bought the jacket earlier this year my friend borrowed the outfit for an event so it is almost new. Silk and cotton the jacket is fabulous quality as to be expected of LAURA ASHLEY and the skirt is just that little bit different…I think the outfit works well so I am selling it as a set.

I found lots of great things in Vinnies today..it was 50% off clothing which was great and I also bought some fabulous beaded jewellery to gift with my clothing sales…yeah! Ted Noffs was also a success as I found my friend a lovely HOT OPTIONS jacket to go with a PER UNA skirt which arrived today from ebay.uk! I also pointed out to the volunteers at One Noffs some pieces by a designer [VICKY VALE] which I felt would work well in their more exclusive designer store. I found several pieces and they are very current, Victorian Gothic style in black velvet, yum!

Woodland Faeries wip for the Bushfire Survivors...ready for sandwiching and quilting

Yesterday I completed this cot sized quilt top. It is full of faeries frolicking in the forest…hope that is seen as a positive thing by parent survivors,  not a negative one.

I  am planning to create  bedding sets for the families to use while they are waiting to rebuild or to restart their lives elsewhere. I see quite a few people are not going back to those towns although you would not know that judging by the commemorative service which seemed overly patriotic to me…I do hope we are not going to start whipping people up into a quasi American fervour of patriotism whenever disasters happen. Oh well it might just be me but my son and I were also a tad put out at the lack of participation by other religious leaders and also where was the representation of the  non religious in that service? Perhaps because it was a memorial service it had to be religious but I do not know if that is always so. Anyway this is just off the top of my head after watching the replay of the service.

This  week on flickr I discovered the wonderful work of Lyne Marie of Abigails Atliers who, along with the glorious photography of her husband, take us back to another time. Lyne Marie sources a lot of her fabrics and furs etc from vintage and charity shops.Even the icy days of winter do not deter Lyne Marie and her husband from getting that perfect shot….not at all easy on Britain’s frigidly cold beaches …but thanks for the effort Lyn …your photoshoots are spectacular!

I was delighted to see a gorgeous gown made using some Laura Ashley curtains! As you may know the earlier Laura Ashley fabric range was always sourced from archivally correct historic collections and Lyne Marie has done a spectacular job with this gown. Like seamstresses of olde Lyne Marie makes her gowns entirely by hand and at an incredibly generous price too. So if you are looking for something for that fancy dress ball or a special party …or the ultimate wedding dress…do remember Abigails Atlier….the standard of the work looks quite breathtaking.

Beautiful Pagodas floating amidst flowers and scenery on my newest tote bag. The Pagoda fabric, a stunning polished cotton, was a remnant found in a scrap bag in a charity shop. As I only had a small piece I designed this bag around that piece of fabric.

Purple Pagodas ... inspiration for tote bag

The Laura Ashley green and white fabric on the sides of the bag is from a set of curtains I found many years ago. The bag is lined with a lime green cotton and the last thing I did was add lovely self covered buttons which I really enjoyed making with a kit found in a thrift shop. Measures 50cm x 50 cm and is hand washable. Check out my etsy regularly for similar bags and please feel free to contact me if you would like a custom one made….you know I have lots of fabric….am sure I can come up with something stunning!

Purple Pagodas

As I do not want to waste any of this gorgeous fabric I shall make some more buttons and use them as feature buttons on blouses etc…..it is well worth the effort for something so elegant.

This is officially my 100th post on WordPress although as I did delete all of last year’s posts it’s not truly 100 but I am still celebrating this and also my soon to be opened etsy store. So I am hosting a giveaway…a lot of people on flickr have commented on my fabrics and thrift finds so this shall be a fabric scraps and laces and various scrumptious goodies giveaway. I shall go through my Laura Ashley and Liberty of London fabrics and cut off bits and co ordinate with lovely buttons and other yummy things. I was thinking there would be enough of everything to make a cute scrap booking style wall mini quilt. there shall also be a lovely evening bag and other goodies…perhaps jewellery. Am making myself excited so better get on with the details!

Okay, should  the reader who is picked be a non sewer I shall make or find them some scrumptious goodies!

Also there shall be a separate giveaway for my regular readers…I shall put their names in a pot and draw one out as well…seems only fair.

There shall be another giveaway for people who come over from flickr as well!

To enter just comment on this post and if possible mention it on your blog too and link back to this blog…..think that is how one does it. Closing date for this giveaway is 20/09/08….September 20th 2008.

Good luck! Oh by the way the little dress is my thrift find for yesterday…a Laura Ashley fitted sheath in a size 8 made in Australia all cotton and fully lined for $12.

Update: over the next few days I shall photograph some of the buttons and goodies that might be included in the giveaway…watch out for those posts!
