shopping spree!

This week at Spotlight I found some gorgeous fabric plus some co ordinating fat quarters

shopping spree!

…some jewellery findings

shopping spree!

and gorgeous tree decorations ….I know its only October but they are purple!

Am thinking half hexi quilt for the fat quarters….skirt with butterfly border for the fabric…leaving enough to border and bind the quilt of course…must get one’s priorities right!

Hope you are having a safe peaceful weekend….its freezing here in Sydney…well at 17 degrees celcius it is a change from the near 30 celcius we have had lately. A good temperature to start on quilts for the many affected by the disasters in our region this week.

This was brought home to me while I was in Spotlight on Thursday. A lady in her thirties was weeping silently as she spoke into her cellphone in a corner of the store. She had obviously tried for the quietest place in the shop…or maybe the place with the most compassionate shoppers…who knows …but as she huddled in the quilting nook she wept… her desperation at not being able to get through to any of her family in Samoa so palpable…it took my breath away.

I turned away to allow her some privacy and when I returned there a few moments later she was gone. We can donate money at present and donate our time to making quilts which can provisde a warm hug.

When words are never enough, or too much, a quilt is a wonderfully therapeutic thing to have. But I would ask everyone to consider what they make…I like to make beautiful quilts and I see no reason why disaster quilts should be any different…lets not swamp these colourful communities with drab quilts which we have salvaged together from our rejects or leftovers. It is not that hard to get a scrap quilt going in a colour scheme which will actually enrich people’s lives…not just keep them warm and alive…. by celebrating the power of colour and art to heal. And all those prayers and positive thoughts stitched into the quilts help too, even if it is only we ourselves who benefit at the time.

Cherri of Cherry House Quilts is hosting a fabulous giveaway of Amy Shimler fabrics for Robert Kaufman which would be wonderful for this purpose…can you imagine the joy a child in those colourful communities would get from that fabric…and the family of that child?

The giveaway finishes on October 7th, Cherri and my birthday. Good luck!

Oh and its a challenge giveaway…I love those!

The incredibly talented EmmaLouise of Sampaguitaquilts.blogspot.com made this quilt as a prize for the 10,000th visitor to her blog  …how lucky were they? I will leave you to read the story behind the quilt but any Australian will remember the Canberra fires and will also note that the date when it was received in Victoria was significant.

Below is her bushfire appeal quilt for Victoria...a stunning use of colour…no running away from the savage beauty of fire for Emma. It is well worth a trip to her blog to see how she has photographed this quilt in the starkly dry beauty of her creek. I find Emma to be one of the most talented quilters in any of my flickr groups. Her scope is broad and she is a true artist….and she is a young mum ….so imagine how her talent will blossom and deepen in coming years…am really excited!

Emma takes commissions for quilts, if you would like to talk to Emma about having something made please contact her at her blog or I can put you in touch.

Bush Fire comfort needed:

Monica at Beyond Pink and Blue has organised a great little gift bag appeal [click on the widget aboves] for children affected by the bush fires. These activity bags will contain new clothes and toys and activities all to fit inside a bag the size of a library bag.

My flickr friend has arranged a quilt block appeal ….the group already has over fifty members. This block is so simple anyone who can sew could do it. Tia is taking on the mammoth task of sewing the blocks together and assembling them into quilts and then quilting them.

Meet Me At Mike’s in Melbourne has a long list of things that can be donated in future like books, bedding……. mobile phone chargers are needed now apparently

Kerry Swain of The Cottage On The Hill in Nundle has already had a get together and the group is in the process of finishing six quilts to send to the red cross… yeah.. Kerry …by the way she has a wonderful place in the country where people can go for quilting retreats

Above is some of the fabric I am cutting up to make children’s quilts and I will use some of it for the wonky stars for Tia’s group as well….there is lots we can do as well as the giving of blood and money initially. Like a lot of people it comforts my mind to use my hands in crafting …I do hope that whatever you do to understand and come to terms with this awful tragedy brings you comfort. Initially I wanted to find out all I could and see all that I could but after weeping tonight when I saw the faces of the dead and then when I read about what actually happened in Marysville..I need to be doing something.

After the death yesterday of Kerryn MacCann and the recent debacle with the blogger who created a web of lies and abused the good nature of many who tried to help her through her journey with cancer I thought hard about what I could do to make this situation better. Unlike the people on her blog who are keen to know the real Kaylee I have no desire to spend any further time on this person whom we know we cannot trust. I have wasted enough time and energy on her and am planning now on actively doing something to help people with cancer or who have someone with cancer in their family.

Shannon is a delightful young man who lost his very short battle with cancer a few months before his sixth birthday. A stunningly beautiful little boy with skin to die for …unfortunately in his case it was the source of his cancer.

Shannon was born with a skin condition called Congenital Melanocytic Nevus/Naevus.

It eventually turned into Melanoma.

I met Erika, Shannon’s mother several weeks ago when she joined one of my quilting groups on flickr and she left a message in the discussion area to introduce herself. We made each other contacts and as I flicked through her photostream I saw her beautiful little boy and asked her for more information about him. She gave me the links which show him having the time of his life with the Defence Forces and also mentioned the charity, Shannon’s Army, which they have set up to make and distribute quilts and cushions to patients with cancer and to families where someone has cancer.

I have decided to make up at least fifty percent of my spare fabric into quilt tops which the group of ladies there and at other charities for cancer and various illnesses will complete into lovely cuddly quilts. This is also good for me as not only do I feel I am doing something positive it helps me as I have not been making larger quilts for some time due to the pain from my spinal nerve condition being so severe. This way I still get the distraction…which is why I started quilting in the first place and someone else can finish the quilt off…lots of people actually prefer the quilting you see. I adore the planning and the patchwork part of it!

Erika kindly gave me permission to blog about this ….she was most distressed to hear about Kaylee. I ask all who read this now who said they look forward to getting to know Kaylee better to consider what is the ultimate good that can come from being her friend. Maybe you could find someone in life off the computer who needs an actual visit …it would be so rewarding and you would get tangible proof of the impact of your visits…which let us face it it is hard to have online. If you cannot do that then perhaps if you are crafty you could find a charity like Shannon’s in your own country and help in some way. I do ask however that you look at that little face and consider the very real anguish that living without him brings Erika and her family and ask yourselves if you can in good conscience support someone who wasted so much of your valuable time and energy. We have been fortunate enough to live past six years of age… isn’t it an obscenity to not use our precious time wisely?
