Earlier this week I found a small, about 12cm, Japanese vase which is signed in Japanese script which until I photographed it just now I thought had a rose on it! It is actually a hibiscus and quite beautiful. I recognised the type of vase as when my husband and I were at an antiques fair last year we bought our son a similar vase with two geisha on it. They both have slightly crackled glazing and are similar in size. We paid over fifty dollars for CJ’s and this one set me back three dollars!
On Wednesday I saw this set of drawers in our local charity shop and had several errands to do further down the road so could not buy them then as I knew I could not carry them home. I was very pleased to see this set as last weekend I saw them in Spotlight for $20 and although I was keen on starting to collect them I wanted to make sure they were strong enough for my needs. So when I saw them in the local charity shop I was really pleased. And luckily nobody else wanted them between Wednesday and today. My plan is to have one drawer for laces one for doilies etc etc. I plan to have mine in my garage storage area as it is much drier in there than in our unit and eventually would like to build a wall of drawers to hold all my crafting paraphernalia.
I also found a pair of brand new pointy toed Italian sandals with half an inch heel….sweet and my needing to be replaced knees loves em too! The Flower Fairies Address and Birthday Book is just darling and useful for gifts as it is Brand Spanking New!! What else? Oh an almost new vintage cotton sheet in a pretty daisy design and a very colourful and extremely large pillowcase from Target which is also brand new…think I am going to make either part of a single strippy duvet cover with that or a market bag for vegetables etc.
Am very happy with this week’s shopping and even more so as I had a chat with the manager of the charity shop where I had the run in earlier this year. [You would need to read the blog post to understand what happened earlier this year.] Suffice to say that I did not go back into that shop until last week…that is over six months since the incident… and I must say that the manager is a fair person and does not appear to hold it against me unlike the female staff who are so officious and cold now. But as I said to my son…if I had known they were going to be like that I would have gone back ages ago as it is fun seeing just how silly people can be sometimes. Awful, aren’t I?

I love the flower fairies! I’ve got a very old, very battered little book of the flower fairies that I was given as a child – a much loved treasure.
I got my own Brand Spanking New thrifted book bargain yesterday – a chunky little book called “1001 Ways To Relax” for £1.50 (cover price £9.99). Along with some luxurious bath foam it will be a perfect birthday gift for a friend who has a challenging and stressful job. And for once I have a gift all sorted out well in advance!
Those shoes are gorgeous too – you are a Queen of Thrifting MQ!
Isn’t it the best feeling when you find something brand spanking new to gift to a friend? I think that is one of the biggest joys of thrifting for me. I did not know anything about the Flower Fairies when I was little ..lucky you and especially to have that book still now. I do love the shoes and I may be queen of thrifting but I have met the Queen of Garage Sales in the US …she is amazing …a children’s librarian and each Saturday she goes out in her convertible and gets things for around 50 cents!!! But it is about the journey and the people she meets along the way…she is a really gifted writer…very whimsical. She is here: http://queenoffiftycents.blogspot.com/2008/11/bentleys-and-belly-dancers.html
Sounds like you’ve been doing some good thrifting. The vase is sweet and what a bargain. The storage containers look very useful too – they appeal to me because I too like to be organised.
Have a great week – I’m away until Thursday evening – a combination of visiting relatives, friends and working. I have to commute every few weeks (which involves staying away from home for 3 nights) as part of my job. Fortunately I can combine it with seeing family as they live near the office I have to attend.
Looking forward to seeing what bargains you find next week – or what you create. You inspire me.
Hope you had a great time and accomplished all you needed to while away. Am busy hand sewing at present and organising my garage and then plan to make some clothes for summer….hope that inspires you too!
Fabulous finds! I must say the Eastern Suburbs are a little better than up here! When I can get out to the Western Suburbs I do find some great stuff. I have found fabulous vintage baby stuff – should really take some photos but just another thing to add to my list!

So the Western Suburbs is good breeding ground for baby clothes? Pun intended!!! Good to hear you are finding things for baby …read about the change table…great!! Did you see the baby blanket I made last post? Totally recycled!!!
yeesh! just read the older post as well – i can tell you were not a happy customer that day and with good reason. honestly, i donate regularly but do sometimes wonder about who is on the receiving end and just how exactly they partition out my things – whether it be clothes, money, recycled goods, etc.
your flats are great, and i wholeheartedly approve of cloth market bags! a much better friend to the environment than plastic!
I just read that flats are back too….apparently President Sarcosi’s wife wore them with formal evening wear….so I guess all will follow? Speaking of politics…are you happy with the election result?
Hi Kathleen
I remember that incident. Well I’m glad things are alright at the store and you are able to go there and check out the new items again.
You did well. I use those bins also and if we were closer I could let you have one because I am a bit short on space and I’ve been able to empty one of my bins into a dresser I now have available. They are great because you can see into them as well.
Nice book…lovely shoes too. I like the little table cloth also and it does go so nice with the vase.
Hope all is well and you are having a great day.
Judi
Thanks Judi ..the drawers are great will pick uP some new ones from the store tomorrow. Hope they do not decide to discontinue them before I manage to get a collection. I hate having to buy everything at once in case they do that…it makes sense to add onto them gradually…especially at twenty dollars for two drawers. It is cheaper actually to buy a dresser as you say but as I want to build upwards pretty high ….almost like a cupboard it makes sense to add to these. Keeping my fingers crossed as do not have a lot of luck with these type of things!!
